Avalanche Report: First CO Fatality of Winter Season

We are deeply saddened to hear of Colorado’s first avalanche fatality this winter season. George Dirth, 28, of Fraser, died after being caught and buried by an avalanche on Parkview Mountain, west of Willow Creek Pass. Search and rescue members from Jackson County, along with Grand County emergency responders, worked on Tuesday, December 31 to recover Dirth’s body. He was backcountry snowboarding with two others. All three were experienced, equipped with avalanche safety gear, and had been digging snow pits throughout the day to check for potential avalanches. The avalanche let go around 1:30 p.m. on the northeast aspect of Parkview Mountain, according to a Grand County Search and Rescue press release.
